Deuteronomy 15:11 – There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open-handed toward your brothers and toward your poor and needy in your land.
The traditional season of Lent contains grief, sorrow, repentance and hope. Annually we take this time to align our values with God’s values. It is hard work – the work of the Lenten season to recognize areas where our lifestyle, thinking or beliefs deviate from Jesus.
For the past three years, Loom has sent out a daily prayer guide during Lent, highlighting those working on the front lines for peace and justice in areas of great need. In the Loom International Prayer Guide for 2019, we will specifically be highlighting various Bible verses that we use in our work. Here at Loom we find that the very scriptures that cause us to celebrate God’s goodness and inform how we should work also convict and correct us.
Psalm 35:10 – My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, O Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
Alongside these verses in the Prayer Guide we will highlight 17 issues in our world today that disproportionately affect the lives of the poor. These issues are generally referred to as Sustainable Development Goals: the 17 issues that nations around the world have set to achieve by 2030.
We have woven these two elements together along with the work the Body of Christ is doing throughout the world today. These stories give us reason to rejoice and to join with them in prayer that the risen Christ will be seen through their work.
We hope you find in these devotionals revelation, repentance, grace and hope as we move toward resurrection celebration. Jesus’ resurrection validates and makes possible all of God’s desires for humanity.
